Recycling, saving power, and reducing our waste of food and other consumables are some of the many ways people are trying to fight climate change. However, none of us have come close to the amazing world record that Ethiopia had set yesterday—a whopping 353,633,660 tree saplings were planted in about 12 hours! In addition to climate changes, Ethiopia planted the trees to combat the rapid deforestation occurring across their nation.
This large planting event was part of a “Green Legacy” campaign, lead by their Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, where the end goal is to plant about 4 billion trees by the end of the year.

Ethiopia has a rapidly growing population with its main subsistence being agriculture. This naturally causes deforestation, land degradation and climate issues.
This is amazing campaign is also part of the UN-REDD Programme (The United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries) launched in 2008. Read more »
